A successful trip to Daqing and Shengli oilfields (June 1 – 7, 2008)

A successful trip to Daqing and Shengli oilfields (June 1 – 7, 2008)

As one of the key endeavors in 2008, CAPA successfully organized a technical exchange delegation to visit Daqing (CNPC) and Shengli (Sinopec) oilfields, the two largest oilfields in China, June 1st through June 7th. The delegation members were Dr. JC Wan (delegation leader), Dr. Lisa Li (co-leader), Dr. Xingong Li, Dr. Dave Chen, Dr. John Zhou, Dr. Hon-Chung Lau, Dr. Zheng Chai, Dr. Jiang Yang and Mr. Shyng-Jye Tsay - total nine CAPA members’ with origins of Mainland, Hongkong and Taiwan.

In Daqing (June 2nd – June 3rd), we visited the polymer mixing factory, a key component in the enhanced oil recovery utilizing polymer flooding technology. Daqing is considered the world leader in polymer flooding which contributed to one-fourth of their total production. We are very impressed with the accomplishment made by our colleagues in Daqing in perfecting this technology. At Daqing, we also visited a number of R&D centers, and also the comprehensive training center for petroleum engineering. We have met the “Daqing’s new Iron Man” – Mr. Wang Qiming. Mr. Wang is an exceptional EOR expert. His hard work made Daqing broke its records again and again on more oil recovery.

After visiting Daqing, we returned to Beijing on June 4th. The delegation had two brief meetings with the senior management from Sinopec E&P Research and Development Institute, and both sides saw importance for more technical exchanges between Sinopec and CAPA in the future.

On June 5th, the delegation arrived at Dongying, the head quarter of Shengli oilfield. We visited various research and development facilities of Shengli oilfield, and impressed with the sustained annual reserve replacement ratio over one by the colleagues in Shengli oilfield. On June 6th, the delegation presented four technical papers to Shengli colleagues in a general session in the morning and five in the afternoon. An unprecedented number of people attended these sessions. Overall, the presentations were well received by more than 135 attendants on the morning section alone.

In addition, we feel strongly that this trip laid a good foundation for future technical interactions between CNPC, Sinopec and CAPA. As a team, we are very grateful to the hard work done by Lisa Li for preparing this delegation, the outstanding performance of the team, the support from the senior managements/foreign affairs office of CNPC and Sinopec, the financial sponsorship from Petromentor and Advantek International. I am confident that CAPA will make bigger impact with similar activities, will attract more petroleum professionals in our community. See you soon in our next event!
